The Equal Exchange is a company founded in Scotland in the late 1970s, when its founders were on an aid trip to Africa and it was revealed that coffee farmers were unable to sustain or profit from their work. With a growing trend in the western world for coffee, the team behind the Equal Exchange began fairly importing coffee beans from Tanzania and Nicaragua and selling them in the UK. This venture has since grown to fairly traded and fully traceable oils, sugars, cocoa, honey and nuts and most recently they have begun the project Grown by Women, with the simple yet essential belief that all "women should have the same access to choices, income and training as men."

"In this ideal world, we'd be looking for a couple of places to pick up the bulk of our groceries – local produce, reasonable prices, you know the drill. Roots and Fruits and Peckhams in the West End of Glasgow both fit the bill, with Roots leading the charge on the fruit and veg front. They encourage you to get what you need for the day, on the day, to cut down waste and help you eat the freshest food you can. Handily, there is an actual greengrocer with years of experience running the place to recommend seasonal produce and give you ideas on what to do with it once you get home, and the adjoining deli can hook you up with delicious fresh bread and pastries."
We received a lovely write up online and in print in this month's The Skinny as part of their 2017 food and drink survey!
We're also very pleased to have been voted as one of Scotland's best food & drink shops again this year!

Freshly baked loaves are also available, along with a range of fresh salads and deli items. ]]>We're delighted to now be stocking Mheat in our wholefoods and organics store. Mheat is Paisley Glasgow based food company Sgaia's new plant-based, vegan, meat replacement that's quickly gaining a fantastic reputation.
Hilary and Alberto from Sgai describe themselves as enthusiastic explorers, dedicated learners, avid listeners and happy herbivores. They are passionate about food culture, nutrition, health and learning about the cultural significance of food in relation to current social systems and environments.
"Here at Sgaia we strongly believe in making plant-based lifestyles and dietary choices equal to those of omnivores. Plant-based living is often seen as a 'giving-up' on food culture, in order to embrace another. We believe that a change in lifestyle shouldn't necessarily mean a change in what we identify with in terms of food culture, nor should it involve being forced to purchase expensive, imported foods. This is why we're proud to be an entirely UK based company, striving to get us all surfing on this New Wave of British Vegan Living."
We just recently started stocking some of their tasty vegan Mheat products.
"Mheat is our own take on a very popular, originally asian food, seitan. Seitan (say-tan) is, essentially, a food made with the protein extracted from wheat flour: gluten. Wheat gluten, as a food product, originated in China sometime around the 6th Century, and was especially popular as a substitute for meat amongst buddhists. Lovingly hand-made by us as per the traditional method, with a few little tweaks here and there, our unique recipe is flavourful, high in protein, low in fat, and features all the knowledge we’ve developed overtime in our little kitchen."
We're very excited about this young, local company and can't wait to see what they produce next and we look forward to continuing to stock our shelves with their wonderful products for all of our vegan customers to enjoy.

About Ave María
The Ave María farm is widely considered to be one of, if not the best supplier of bitter oranges in the world for two fundamental reasons: because of the composition of the soil, which provides a special sweetness to the orange, and because of the organic cultivation, which preserves the aroma and purity of the fruit. Keeping up the tradition, Ave María is currently run by three women who are passionate in looking after all of the details of their precious orchard.
