September - What's in Season

September - What's in Season

Our pick of the best seasonal fruit, veg and stems at Roots Fruits & Flowers this month.

Greengages
Sweet little juicy dessert plums, and not always green! Greengages are delicious eaten raw or cooked in desserts (try a nice crumble or pie!) or turn them into a jam.

Apples

We've got a whole range of delicious apples in stock at the moment, both from UK orchards and further afield. Back on the shelves is the popular Discovery which has a wonderful sweet, lightly acidic taste with a slight strawberry flavour making it one of our favourites.

Physalis
Also known as Chinese Lanterns, these beautiful stems of bell-shaped flowers are back on our flower stand this month. Featuring in many of our Autumn bouquets and on their own they make a great addition to the home at this time of year. You can also buy the fruits from these plants in the fruit & veg shop!

Courgettes
Cheap, versatile and easy to cook - fry, roast, steam or grill them. Great in pasta dishes, on tarts and even in cakes!

Sugar Pie Squash
Super cute and very tasty. Sweeter than larger carving pumpkins (and a little less messy!), roast them and you can use the flesh in a variety of dishes - soups, risotto, pies etc.

Freedom Bakery

Freedom Bakery

freedom bakery bread roots fruits flowers

We are delighted to be stocking freshly baked bread from the Freedom Bakery. The Freedom Bakery is a social enterprise artisan bakery based at HMP Low Moss near Bishopbriggs which trains and develops the skills of a small team of people in custody who learn on the job.  All bread is currently baked inside the custodial estate using traditional artisan methods and the best ingredients available and then sold outside.

The Freedom Bakery aim to create employability through employment and to develop the people in prison’s skills, skills within the baking profession but also skills that are transferrable across various industries. The role of employability is a huge factor in changing from a path that will lead back to crime, reducing reoffending being one of the Freedom Bakery’s other social aims, but also an economic aim. In a research paper by the Wise Group, it was calculated that for every person with a conviction who could stay in employment for a period of 5 years would save the Scottish taxpayer £940,000 per individual. Furthermore, someone’s risk of reoffending after just 2 years in the workplace was reduced by over 90%.

Freedom Bakery recently reached their target of £15,000 through donations on a Crowdfunding campaign to enable them to open a second bakery and allow the project grow. They will soon be able to work with more people and increase demand, something we’re sure many of you will be pleased about after trying their delicious bread.

We currently receive a delivery from Freedom Bakery in the afternoons. You can pick up some of their tasty bread from our Wholefoods & Organics store at 457 Great Western Road.

Great British Chefs - Glasgow Guide

Great British Chefs - Glasgow Guide

We are delighted to have been mentioned by Great British Chefs in their Glasgow city food guide!

Roots, Fruits and Flowers – With a branch in both Woodlands and Finnieston, this jauntily named florist, grocer and deli keeps health-conscious inhabitants of the West End well stocked in all sorts of virtuous produce. Freshly baked loaves are also available, along with a range of fresh salads and deli items. It's easy to while away a long time in the grocer next door (despite its relatively small size), and the friendly staff leave you to prod, poke and sniff the fruit and vegetable selection to your heart's content.

Mheat - Now Available in Wholefoods & Organics

Mheat Vegan Meat Range at Roots Fruits and Flowers Glasgow

We're delighted to now be stocking Mheat in our wholefoods and organics store. Mheat is Paisley Glasgow based food company Sgaia's new plant-based, vegan, meat replacement that's quickly gaining a fantastic reputation.

Hilary and Alberto from Sgai describe themselves as enthusiastic explorers, dedicated learners, avid listeners and happy herbivores. They are passionate about food culture, nutrition, health and learning about the cultural significance of food in relation to current social systems and environments.

"Here at Sgaia we strongly believe in making plant-based lifestyles and dietary choices equal to those of omnivores. Plant-based living is often seen as a 'giving-up' on food culture, in order to embrace another. We believe that a change in lifestyle shouldn't necessarily mean a change in what we identify with in terms of food culture, nor should it involve being forced to purchase expensive, imported foods. This is why we're proud to be an entirely UK based company, striving to get us all surfing on this New Wave of British Vegan Living."

Mheat Vegan Meat Range at Roots Fruits and Flowers Glasgow

We just recently started stocking some of their tasty vegan Mheat products.

"Mheat is our own take on a very popular, originally asian food, seitan. Seitan (say-tan) is, essentially, a food made with the protein extracted from wheat flour: gluten. Wheat gluten, as a food product, originated in China sometime around the 6th Century, and was especially popular as a substitute for meat amongst buddhists. Lovingly hand-made by us as per the traditional method, with a few little tweaks here and there, our unique recipe is flavourful, high in protein, low in fat, and features all the knowledge we’ve developed overtime in our little kitchen."

We're very excited about this young, local company and can't wait to see what they produce next and we look forward to continuing to stock our shelves with their wonderful products for all of our vegan customers to enjoy.

Now stocking Dusty Girls Natural Makeup by Moo Goo

Our shelves are now stocked with the new Dusty Girls makeup crafted by the clever people at Moo Goo Skin Care!  The range was created after the maker’s noticed how much better skin looked after a day in the country. “It might be a little dusty, but it always appear more vibrant than after a day inside.”

Inspired by this look, they have used natural clays and minerals of the earth to create a healthy range of makeup which not only looks good but improves the overall condition of our skin. Farmed by the popular Australian skincare brand Moo Goo who provide an excellent range of products for people with skin problems or sensitive skin, the Dusty Girls makeup range adapts the same principles by providing great looking, healthy make-up minus the chemicals.

We have a selection of products now available in our wholefoods & organics store, 457 Great Western Road.

PomegranatesIt’s a great time to pick up these red jewelled delights! Cauliflower
One of our favourite vegetables of the season is a true British classic, the incredibly versatile cauliflower. Whoever said cauliflower is boring was very wrong, it contains an impressive array of nutrients including vitamins C & K, minerals and antioxidants and so really deserves a regular rotation in your diet. Additionally, it’s inexpensive and there are a tonne of great things to do with it. Why not try some of these recipes by Yottam Ottolenghi.
Red Naomi RoseWith Valentine’s day just around the corner, It’s that time of year again when our flower shop fills up with hundreds of these classic blooms. These subtly scented, red velvety beauties are amongst the best quality cut roses you’ll find anywhere in Glasgow. We’ll be making up our classic Valentine’s bouquets of a dozen red roses, as well as selling single stem blooms in a box with some luxury chocolates selected from our wholefoods & organics store.
